On April 15, 2010, Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC and member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, inspected the State Key Laboratory of Inorganic Synthesis and Preparative Chemistry at Jilin University. He first listened to the report of Prof. Bai Yang, dean of the College of Chemistry, about faculty, teaching, research, and international cooperation of the College of Chemistry, and then talked warmly with academician Ruren Xu, former deputy director of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of Jilin Province. He also listened to the report of Dewen Chen, party secretary of Jilin University, and Tao Zhan, president of Jilin University about the cultivation of talents in the chemistry discipline. During his visit to the labs, he interacted with Prof. Qisheng Huo, director of the State Key Laboratory of Inorganic Synthesis and Preparative Chemistry, who returned from the United States to work full-time in the lab. He also listened to the report of Prof. Xiaoyang Liu, who returned from Canada, about the scientific work carried out in his group. Wu Bangguo stressed the importance of basic research and commended the strength of the chemistry program at Jilin University.
